The design, commissioned by Florence Knoll, allowed Eero Saarinen to continue exploring the possibilities of a chair that achieved comfort through the shape of its shell, rather than the depth of cushioning - a concept he had worked on previously with Charles Eames. The resulting ergonomic chair envelopes the user, hence its unusual name.
The Relax and the Classic versions of the Womb chair are equal in appearance and dimensions. Made in the US, the Classic Womb chair is constructed from a fiberglass shell, which is then carefully hand-upholstered, making allowances for slight variations in dimensions. The Relax Womb chair is produced in Italy, and features a slightly smaller shell which is upholstered and finished with a fabric or leather cover.
The Knoll logo is stamped into the structure of the chair.

Base: Steel rod, polished chrome finish. Frame and Upholstery: Womb chair: Foam over molded, reinforced fiberglass shell. Separate seat, back and cushions: Constructed of polyester fibre with foam core. Glides: Stainless steel and nylon articulating glides.
